In line with 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly designated 21st May as International Tea Day. The Day is marked to promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.

The tea sub-sector is a major contributor to the realization of Vision 2030 and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The industry contributes 2% of Kenya's GDP and 4% of the agriculture GDP. Over 834,129 farmers and other 6.5 million people (13% of Kenya's population) derive livelihood from tea directly and indirectly respectively.

In the year 2023, the total export volume hit a new high of 522 million Kgs translating to a record of Kshs. 180 billion in export earnings. This milestone is the best earnings ever attained by the Tea industry in Kenya. To celebrate these achievements, the Tea Board of Kenya, the apex body regulating the tea sub-sector in Kenya is coordinating the tea industry actors, partners, and all Kenyans in celebrating this year's International Tea Day on 21st May 2024 at Nandi Bears Golf Club in Nandi Hills.

The theme of this year's celebrations is “A global toast to tea.”

Therefore, the Tea Board of Kenya invites you to the International Tea Day and preceding high-impact promotional activities: Tea Fun Race, Tea Golf Challenge, Tree planting, Specialty Tea Summit & Competition, Tea Road Shows, and in-supermarket tea activations.
