Uganda Tea Association Consultative forum held on 3rd May 2024 in Kampala
Uganda Tea Association in collaboration with East African Tea Trade Association organized a meeting to address the current crisis facing Uganda Tea Producers and other EATTA Members countries arising from the declining tea prices.
The forum was attended by Hon Uganda Minister of Agriculture, section of Uganda Member of Parliament, section of EATTA Board of Directors, Uganda Tea Producers, and members from different EATTA membership categories.
Key recommendations from the multi-stakeholder meeting were:
- Introduction of fertilizer subsidy, stabilization fund and other suggested interventions to combat the current Tea Crisis. Bail out being emphasized to avoid the closure of more factories.
- Processors should make deliberate effort to be accountable for the tea quality. Accepting only good quality green leaf and educating farmers and all concerned on the importance of good quality green leaf and best agronomic practices for the estates.
- Bilateral agreements with the Kenya Govt. This will address the Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) there in.
- Harmonization of tea policy within East Africa.
